😎 Bragging Rights
You’re a brand with a podcast. That’s worth bragging about. Here’s why:
Today, September 30 is International Podcast Day! What a perfect day to shout from the rooftops that you not only have a podcast, you ROCK at podcasting. Here are a few things we suggest you put together for a mini podcast promotion to celebrate the day:
Get into the Conversation - Use #InternationalPodcastDay to engage with others worldwide talking about the event and let them know about your podcast
Share the Love - Subscribe to a new show and talk about it using #InternationalPodcastDay
Show Appreciation - Send feedback to your favorite podcasters and tell them thank you. You can do this via an Apple review or rating. They help!
💡 Sharing the Genius
Our favorite inspiration to help you be great at podcasting
The podcast audience is evolving day by day and this recent report from Audio Active Group found that listeners are not only employed, upscale, and educated, but also younger than other media. Podcasting’s median age is 34 with AM/FM radio at 46 and ABC/CBS/NBC network television at 60.
With the perceived explosive rise of podcasting within the everyday vernacular, we loved this piece musing Where Does Podcasting Go Next by Tom Webster, SVP at Edison Research. Written fresh off of Podcast Movement, it’s a deep look into the industry and can be seen as a “manifesto for growth”. We are so pumped to be involved in this space.
🏖 Sandbox It
Ideas for you to implement this week. Literally. Try it once and see if it works.
Still so much to digest from Podcast Movement but one thing that stuck with us was the talk about discoverability. Did you know that YOU are more discoverable than your podcast? The Podcast discovery funnel is very gate kept so here are three ways you can level this up.
Funnel from other channels - Hilarious on Twitter? Have a killer newsletter? Is LinkedIn your jam? Look for ways people discover you, then tell them about your podcast. This isn’t about saying “I have a podcast!” it’s about slowly funneling listeners from other channels to your show. Add a one click subscribe button on LI or FB, make a newsletter podcast inspired. There are historically seven touch points before adaptation, so use all the touch points available to you.
Connectivity - you can’t fake it, it’s part of human interaction. In building your content, in talking to your guests, in talking to your audience (social, newsletters, in person!) bring that vulnerability, understand what they are saying on a deeper level, CONNECT as a person, and not as a robot who knows stuff.
Everything is PR - You are an expert. That’s why you have a show. Use that expertise to offer insights for media stories, news-of-the-day happenings, or dedicated articles about your topic. PR is a long game but any endorsement is an opportunity for more people to discover your podcast.
For more secrets and insights, talk to your producer at your next strategy meeting.
🎥 Smile, You’re on Camera
We’ve been talking about how video is where it’s at and we want to help you bring your on camera dreams to life. Here are some tips to make you picture perfect for your podcast interviews.
Lights! It’s so important to be properly lit so that the world can see your shining face! Pick a spot to record that has a lot of natural light on your face (not behind you) or invest in a ring light to perfectly light up your mug.
Camera! Your setup should be simple. Nothing too distracting behind you, and you should fill in the full frame. Make sure that you and your guest match as it relates to filling the image space. Instead of having a full room behind you, get your back as close to a wall to prevent unexpected distractions.
Action! It goes without saying, but as a reminder, do not look at yourself the whole time. Look at your interviewee, just as you were having a conversation with them. Respond when appropriate and make sure your gaze is natural and not darting around the screen.
